Mustangs 50th

In case anyone has not heard 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Mustang, so we joined friends Mark and Marion who own a 1968 coupe and took our 1967 coupe for a run to Germany. We had heard from the 1st Mustang Club of Germany that their annual rally was being held at Koln, (that's Cologne to folk what live up in tʻhills), with a tour of the Ford factory on the Friday. We pointed the horses south for a gallop over the Pennines then down the A1 to Hull for a ride on P&Os finest to Rotterdam. A run across the Netherlands saw us having lunch provided by Ford at their European Headquarters in Koln. A full factory tour, with English speaking guide was next as we watched almost 1,000 robots building Fiestas with the shell being 98% built by the automated workers. We followed the production line until completed cars are driven out for a test drive. I don't know what Henry would think when watching this when he used to have his model Ts pulled from one work station to the next by a man with a rope. We were then taken to see their collection of Classic and Historic racing cars, this included Eggenberger Sierra, RS Capri's, Zakspeed Capri, RS 200, Model Ts, Model A which was the first car built when the factory opened in1931. They have mint condition Mk 1 Escorts, Taunus which is the German Cortina, single seater racers and every model to carry the blue oval badge you can think of. As we were leaving we were each given 50 years of Mustang commemorative tankards, I may have had better days but this one must rate alongside - passing my driving test - getting married - buying your first mustang - being out for a ride in your Ford pickup and finding a brewery truck which had shed its load - delete those not applicable. Saturday was show day. Our journey through the back streets of the city was interrupted by a local youth who ran to our car waving the boot lock witch had self ejected from Marks Mustang in front, “vielen danke mein herr” for that one. Almost 1,000 Mustangs gathered at the old Koln airport. One of the hangers was fitted out as an American Diner with pinball machines, Jukebox, and girls on roller skates whizzing round collecting glasses and wearing your eyeballs out. The Ford Big Band was on the stage with a singer playing 50s and 60s songs. The 2015 Mustang was unveiled in red hard top and silver convertible, but no test drives I'm afraid. The evening was brought to a close with 260 gallons of beer being do nated by the Ford Motor Company - Cheers Henry!
Sunday Morning saw us back at the show having breakfast of waffles with the Ford logo embossed on them! should I eat it or keep it - decisions - decisions. I did manage to get a helium balloon with 50 years Mustang on it, I said it was for a child - well I am only 64 3/4. The raffle had a nice 1965 Coupe 6 cylinder in nice condition as 1st prize but don't know if German members would let me leave the country with it.
We were made very welcome by all the German Mustang Owners Club members so it was definitely a weekend to remember.

Best wishes Norm and Jill Scott
Mark and Marion Roberts.
